The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma South Constituency, Ursula Owusu has taken a swipe at the decision of the Funeral Planning Committee to bury the late President Mills at the Flagstaff House, formerly the Jubilee House.
According to her the purpose for which the Kufuor Administration built the edifice was to house living Presidents and other supporting staff.
The search for a burial place for the late President has not gone without controversies with the family of the late President requesting the body to be buried at his hometown in Ekumfi Otuam, Central Region.
The funeral committee nevertheless short listed two areas for the burial of the late President. The areas are the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and the Flagstaff House with the latter appearing as the preferred choice.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Thursday morning, the NPP parliamentary aspirant said that future President and his family cannot have their background turned into a cemetery.
According to her, the scene could be traumatizing to children of future Presidents.
The Ablekuma South Constituency parliamentary aspirant intimated that since there are future plans to convert the Osu Christianborg Castle into a museum, it would be appropriate to convert part of the Castle gardens into the burial site of the late President and other former heads of state.
Ursula Owusu further chastised the ruling National Democratic Congress for hijacking the Funeral Planning Committee of the late President.
She added that decisions the funeral committee take now have possibility of being reverted in the instance of a new government.
The funeral of the late Prof. J.E.A. Mills is slated for August 8-10.
