The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt has described the calls for a Coroner’s Inquest into the death of Prof. Evans Atta Mills by some sections of the public as “unnecessary”.According to Kwesi Pratt, those demanding for a Coroner’s Inquest are doing it out of ignorance since a post mortem was conducted on the late President’s body in the presence of some family members.A Coroner’s Inquest is an inquiry into the manner and cause of an individual’s death, conducted by the Coroner or Deputy Coroner with a court reporter and six jurors present. The purpose of an inquest is to present information concerning the victim’s death in order for the jury to determine the cause and manner of a death.The cause of death is often readily apparent and obvious after the inquests, based on the facts, circumstances, medical evidence and in some cases, toxicology and autopsy results. The real essence of the jurors’ responsibility is to establish the manner of death (Suicide, Homicide, Accident, Natural or Undetermined).Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Tuesday, Kwesi Pratt stated that those who are spearheading calls for a Coroner’s Inquest are not doing for genuine purposes but also “adding salt to injury” of the bereaved family in these trying moments.Nevertheless, Kwesi Pratt revealed that he is aware a post mortem has been conducted on the late President by several top notch pathologists selected from health institutions of high repute in the country.According to Kwesi Pratt, the relevant authorities must however release the said autopsy report to silence the “unnecessary noise” being made about the supposed cause of death of the late President.Sammy Awuku, a Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) however stated that there must be a comprehensive investigation to reveal the chronology of events on the day that the President died.He added that since the death of President Mills, many theories have been propounded as to how his emergency situation was handled by medical practitioners at the Castle, in the ambulance and at the 37 Military Hospital where Mills is reported to have died.Sammy Awuku said that such an investigation would not only put to rest the rumours but also ensure that future occurrences are handled better.
