The Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) on Sunday tagged the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as violent political parties whose operations pose a threat to democracy. “In recent times there have been incidents of violence within the NDC and between the NDC and the NPP…the threat to peace and stability is implicit in their confrontation over implementation of the Representation of the People’s Amendment Law (ROPAL). “NDC says it will not accept results of elections if the law were to be implemented…Indeed the NDC claims that the NPP has been winning elections through rigging and that if they win power they will imprison the NPP,” Dr Obed Yao Asamoah DFP founder stated at Odododiodio Constituency in Accra. The party had organised a mini-congress to outdoor the new Interim Executive Committee for the Constituency, headed by Mr George N. K. Phixio-Owoo, Chairman; Mr William Attoh-Okine and Madam Caroline Lokko first and second vice chairperson; and Nii Ardey Ansah-Hill, Constituency Secretary. Dr Asamoah, who was the former National Chairman of the NDC noted that such antagonistic conflict is imminent; therefore the formation of DFP was to resist such confrontational politicking in the country. He said DFP’s formation was also to battle against the use of deceit, lies, insults, vilification and character assassination as political tools against opponents, adding; ”I have been a victim of such viciousness and I know what I am talking about, this culture has been worsened by the use of serial callers on the Frequency Modulation Stations. “On most of these FM Radio stations all that they chant out were rubbish; I hardly listen to them, so if you call to a radio station and insult Obed, you have not done anything the chances were that I will not hear, I might be sitting at home enjoying a bottle of beer.” The DFP founder noted that Ghana had had its fair share of turbulence, hatred for one another and violence against political opponents, especially during Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s regime, which was perpetrated by the National Liberation Movement (NLM), the Togoland Congress and others for political objectives. He therefore urged DFP members to stand and be counted, as time to change the culture of Ghanaian politics is now, stressing; “it takes few to transform, many to conform…be counted among the few.” Dr Asamoah urged the members to ignore people who would question them about their past relationship with other political parties, especially the NDC and questioned their moral right to point out the mistakes of society. According to the DFP Founder: “we will feel free to speak out when the outlook of any party is not in consonance with our fundamental beliefs. No one can choose our friends or enemies for us. “However, some opposition parties we know will pose a serious threat to our lives and liberty if they were to win power,” adding that he can produce a long list of architects of previous regimes who have been devoured by the systems they helped to create. “It requires a person with a slave mentality or a masochist to want to help bring to power persons who would inflict pain on him…We are not such persons and that is why we have ventured to set up a new party,” the NDC former Chairman stated. Meanwhile Alhaji Ishmael Bawa, DFP Education Officer had alleged that leading members of the party including; Dr Asamoah, Nii Okaija Adamafio, first Vice Chairman, Nii Koi Anderson, Greater Accra Regional Chairman had received death threat messages on their mobile phones. A purported electronic text message shown to the GNA from a MTN number 23324519621 reads; “Now you will regret for your life, you need to say bye to your family, you have three days to live, you have been buried already.” Alhaji Bawa described the people behind the text messages as cowards who were only survives on empty threats, “we are not afraid of anybody some of us are waiting for such messages.” Other speakers included; Alhaji Rahman Issaka National Chairman; Mr Kwaku Baah, First National Vice Chairman; Nii Okiaja Adamafio, second National Vice Chairman; Mr Osie Piesie Atoh, National Organiser; and Mr Bede Ziedeng Interim Deputy General Secretary and Mr John Amekeh Interim Deputy General Secretary in-Charge of Finance and Administration.
