The NPP Member of Parliament for Okere constituency, Daniel Botwe is questioning the origin of the withdrawn Constitutional Instrument (73) which was to create additional 45 constituencies due to its “horrible mistakes”.
According to him, the errors that have characterized the CI that led to its withdrawal from parliament casts doubts in the minds of Ghanaians whether the CI emanated from the Electoral Commission (EC).
The controversial Constitutional Instrument (CI) 73 creating 45 additional constituencies was withdrawn in the face of intensive divisive debates in parliament.
Although the opposition NPP and other civil society organizations are against the creation of the new constituencies, the EC says it will not renege on its constitutional mandate.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii-Sen on Thursday, Dan Kwaku Botwe expressed doubts that the CI emanated from the EC due to what he described as unpardonable mistakes in the CI.
“I doubt whether the CI 73 was created by the Electoral Commission either than that it would not been characterized by horrible errors. It contains errors which is creating embarrassment for all of us. Isn’t it the same EC that has been working on the creation of constituencies, then why these unpardonable errors?”
Dan Botwe stressed that the errors in the CI 73 has smeared the hard won credibility of the EC.
The former General Secretary of the opposition NPP said although he is not against the creation of the new constituencies, his concern however has to do with the timing.
“The timing is wrong. We have only about two months to elections and we are now about to create constituencies? It is very bad for us. Look between now and December, the EC has lots of work to do apart from creating the constituencies so the EC will create problem for itself. We (MP’s) should have been in our constituencies monitoring the exhibition of the voter register but are now back in parliament deliberating on the new constituencies” he said.
Mr. Botwe noted that elections always generate tension so things that could bring about tension must be avoided so that it does not plunge the nation into chaos.
He admonished the EC to do things rightfully and legally because peace is not won from mere words but actions from individuals and institutions.
