Sixteen thousand-member sanitation taskforce has been deployed across the country with a charge to keep the nation clean. This follows last week’s directive by President John Mahama to the local government minister to present a proposal on how to address the serious sanitation problems facing the country. The president took time off his Greater Accra thank you tour to launch the national sanitation program at Agbogbloshie here in Accra under the theme a cleaner Ghana- a Shared responsibility for a better Ghana.Performing the launch, President Mahama articulated his government’s plans to commission a compost plant, acquire a new liquid waste treatment plant as well as incinerators to treat medical waste from various hospitals.“One of the major constraints of refuse collection in this city has been the availability of landfill sites. And so with the current landfill site we are sure we have somewhere to put the garbage away.“We are also about to commission the new compost plant in the western part of Accra. It has a 90,000 ton capacity and this compost plant will separate the garbage and take out what can go for recycling and then what should go into compost will be made into compost and supplied to farmers for the farming activities.“We are also in the process of rehabilitating the liquid waste processing plant. It is a shame that in the 21 century we still have trucks standing the sea and pouring raw liquid waste into the sea.He said Parliament has approved a contract for a new liquid waste treatment plant.Local Government Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo also outlined series of initiatives aimed at improving sanitation across the country.
