Passengers heading to London may have more options as Ethiopian Air has initiated talks with the government to take up an Accra-London route by September this year.
Although some other airlines like South Africa Airways have expressed interest in taking up the same route, only British Airways does a direct flight from Accra to London.
A situation some stakeholders say limits passengers when it comes to options for flying direct from Accra to London.
But in an interview with the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gabre Mariam said aside seeking to partner government to establish a home-based carrier, they are hopeful to commence an Accra-London route by September.
He was speaking at the ongoing routes Africa 2018 in Accra.
Tewolde Gabre Mariam said, “We are discussing with the Ghanaian government on providing services between Accra and London because this is also served by only one carrier and the public has to get choices. Although we are in its initial stages we think we can start in September.”
On the issue of the establishment of the home-based carrier, Mr Gabre Mariam said they have submitted their business proposal which will subsequently go through process review then government approval.
He added that when given the nod to partner government to establish the home-based carrier, they will also operate on the domestic market.
