Investigative Journalists in Africa and other parts of the world have converged for the African Investigative Journalism Conference at the Witwatersrand University in South Africa.
The conference, dubbed: Power Reporting 2012 is organized by the Wits University in collaboration with the Forum for African Investigative Reporters
Two Multimedia Reporters, Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah and Benjamin Tetteh of Joy Fm are attending the conference alongside Crusading Guide’s Anas Aremeyaw Anas on the invitation of the organizers.
It is the third time since 2010 that Ohemeng who served as one of the speakers at the 2010 edition, is attending the conference.
This year’s event, is packed with more courses than ever, with 70 sessions in all.
Some selected speakers for the event includes Ghana’s pride, Anas Aremeyaw Anas who will trill his audience as he speaks on the “art of undercover reporting”.
Anas’ undercover stints have won him several international awards for his works on human rights, anti-corruption, global health and the environment.
The graduate of the University of Ghana’s Law School continue to thrill and amaze his audience with breath taken undercover journalism.
Others includes Kenya based Environmental Investigative Journalist Wanjohi Kaburu, Brant Houston, Dario Milo, Anton Harber, Heather Brooke, among others.
Meanwhile, in his welcoming address, the Dean of Faculty of Humanities at the Wits Univesity, Tawana Kupe said all power needs to be accounted for.
He however regrets power on the African continent has not been accounted for, which is “detriment to the continent”.
According to him, “Africa is not poor”, and hoped Investigative Journalists will redeem the people on the continent from corrupt leadership.
He believes Investigative Journalism will help empower the people and push for development of democracy.
