A number of roads in the Upper West Region are to be upgraded following the recent heavy rains, which destroyed most of the roads rendering them unusable. The Tumu-Han main road is to receive spot improvement, while the Tumu-Gwollu-Hamile road will be upgraded. Mr Frank Otoo, Upper West Area Manager of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), announced this when he accompanied the Upper West Regional Minister, Mr George Hikah Benson on an inspection of roads and government development projects on Saturday. Mr Benson inspected roads and development projects in Sissala West, Sissala East and Wa East districts to see the progress of work on on-going projects to determine the approval of contract certificates submitted to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC). The tour also offered him the opportunity to encourage contractors working on the projects to deliver according to specification and on schedule. Mr Otoo said the Wellembelle-Santizan, Wahabu-Funsi-Yala, Fian-Wahabu and Wa-Bulenga-Yala roads would also be improved. He said the Domwini-Nandom, Nadowli-Lawra, Lawra-Han and Lawra-Nandom roads would also be rehabilitated. Mr Otoo said work on the Funsi and Wechau town roads would commence soon to facelift the Wa East and West District capitals. Mr Benson inspected a GH¢34,500 (¢345 million) Day Nursery block built for the Tumu Training College Demonstration Primary School by the European Union. At the Tumu Training College, Mr Salifu Iddrisu, Vice Principal, conducted Mr Benson round projects provided for the College by the GETFund and appealed to the Department of Feeder Roads and the Sissala East District Assembly to provide access roads to and within the College compound. He said there were no access roads on the campus and students and staff were exposed to snakebites. Mr Benson interacted with the students and assured them of the authorities’ determination to solve some major problems facing the College. He said teachers held the trump card to the success of the new education reform and that government would do everything possible to facilitate the smooth and successful implementation of the reform. The students expressed their gratitude to the government for providing the College with the projects and appealed for more to enhance teaching and learning at the College. Mr Benson also inspected a 1.8 billion cedi Sakai Small-Town Water System provided by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency. At Funsi, in the Wa East District, Mr Benson inspected a European Union funded warehouse project, a Junior Staff quarters and a Senior High School project. Source: GNA
