The Electoral Commission has directed that voting be adjourned to Saturday, December 8, 2012 where voting could not proceed because verification machines failed to function effectively.
The Director of Public Affairs at the EC, Mr. Owusu Parry, revealed this in an interview with Joy News, your Election Headquarters.
“For those centres where verification was an issue, the Commission is sending devices there to enable people to cast their vote,” he stated.
There have been widespread complaints about malfunctioning verification machines that have made it impossible for large numbers of people to vote.
The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has held a press conference demanding immediate urgent steps by the EC to enable people to exercise their franchise.
Deputy Campaign Co-ordinator of Mahama 2012 Campaign, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah told journalists it was unacceptable for people to be disenfranchised through no fault of theirs.
He said there were manual options in all situations in the event of technical failures.
Presidential Spokesperson, John Jinapor, who also spoke to the press, said the EC could not punish ordinary people by disenfranchising them because of its own inefficiencies.
“As a matter of urgency, corrective measures must be taken to avert any problems,” he maintained.
