The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, Alfred Agbesi and the Deputy Local Government Minister, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, are at each other’s throat over the naming of Adenta as the new municipal capital for Ashaiman and Adenta.
While the MP for Adenta, Kwadwo Opare Hammond has welcomed the development, there has been an outpour of rage and disappointment by residents of Ashaiman over the choice of Adenta, a decision announced on Thursday for the two areas.
Deputy Minister Maxwell Kofi Jumah says the decision was taken after careful consultation and assessment of facilities with all who matter with the decision.
But Alfred Agbesie told Joy News that there was no such consultation either with him and the decision could therefore not have been coming from consensus.
He said Mr. Jumah came to the constituency without as much courtesy as even greeting him but managed to hold meetings to arrive at favouring Adenta over Ashaiman.
Alfred Agbesie maintained that the choice cannot be justified.
“What they have done is just that because they are in power, and please tell him that they should go on, in 2008, my party will come to power, we shall reverse whatever they have done. NDC will come to power in 2008, we shall reverse it. Ashaiman will get the capital of the municipality that they have created.”
But Kofi Jumah told Joy News he needn’t meet personally with the angry MP, and apart from his disappointment with Agbesi’s passionate disapproval of the choice, he also believed Agbesi did not appreciate the issues involved.
Kofi Jumah said it was not the practice to consult in deciding the political capital of any community and whether the people of Ashaiman like it or not, the two communities are going to be one and prosecute development programmes together.
Again the fact that one place is chosen for the capital does not make the other and its people subservient to the chosen community.
