Even before the Electoral Commission declares the Akatsi South and Buem seats vacant for by-election, women’s group Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) – Ghana is demanding that political parties field women for the positions.
The two seats became vacant following the appointment of the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Doe Adjaho the incumbent for the Akatsi South and the death of the newly elected member for Buem, Hon. Henry Ford Kamel.
Speaking to Joy News, Governance Manager for WiLDAF, Frank Bodza contends that the choice of women to fill the seats would increase the current number of 30 women MPs, while helping Ghana’s efforts toward attaining the MDG Goal 3 by the 2015 deadline.
According to Mr. Bodza, the NDC in particular would be honouring its manifesto promise of ensuring an increased representation and participation of women in its party structures and government machinery.
