The Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), recognized as the top private university in Ghana by the Ghana Tertiary Awards, successfully held its 2024 Science, Technology, and Innovation Expo (STI Expo) on November 14, 2024.

The event took place at the University’s Knowledge City Campus in Kokomlemle, Accra, chaired by Professor Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, the Associate Dean of Innovation & Industrial Partnerships.

The STI Expo brought together faculty, staff, students, industry leaders, and student delegates from various schools and tertiary institutions, creating a vibrant atmosphere for innovation and collaboration.

This annual event serves as a platform for AIT students to showcase their final year projects, reflecting the university's commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry.

The day-long programme featured a series of presentations from final-year students across Engineering, Information Technology, and Business. Highlights included student pitch competitions offering invaluable insights into the startup process, as well as exhibitions of innovative Senior Design Projects.

Among the remarkable projects presented were:

• Retrofit of Akosombo Dam and Feasibility Study of Flood Intervention Measures
• Design and Construction of a Smart Helmet and Monitoring System for Miners
• Design and Construction of a High Panic Audio Security Alert Door
• Design and Construction of a Gesture Communication System with an Embedded Heart Rate Sensor
• Smartphone-Based Object Detection Using YOLO
• Ghanaian Recipe Recommendation System Using Computer Vision with Nutritional Database (SavorGH)
• An Emotion-Driven Music Recommender
• Design and Implementation of a Smart Health Diagnostics System for Women’s Health in Peri-Urban and Rural Communities, Nigeria
• Advanced Smart Blind Stick

According to Professor Ntim, the rapid advancement in technology necessitates a strong focus on practical education to effectively prepare students for real-world challenges.

He emphasized that AIT’s curriculum integrates both classroom learning and hands-on experiences, including site visits to industries and training placements, ensuring students are well-equipped for their future careers.

The successful execution of the STI Expo reaffirms AIT's dedication to nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators who will contribute to societal advancement and economic development in Ghana.
