Chief Executive Officer of non-governmental organization, Obiri Foundation, is advocating for health screening and clinical examinations to be added to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
According to Stephen Obiri Yeboah, this will help in the early detection of diseases and lessen the burden of preventable deaths across the country.
“Through our work, we’ve realized that a lot of people are unable to regularly visit the hospitals when they are sick because of financial issues and this sometimes has led to the loss of lives from very preventable conditions. We believe that in order to reduce disease burden and help citizens to be more conscious of their health, it will be good for the NHIS to add free health screenings to its list. It is often said that health and wealth and the nation needs a productive, healthy workforce to develop.”
Mr. Obiri Yeboah made these remarks when the Obiri Foundation held free medical checks for about a 1,000 residents of the Nhyieaso Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
The communities included; Santasi, Fankyenebra, South Suntreso, Patase, Ahodwo, Daban and Atasomanso.
Residents were screened for hypertension, diabetes, malaria, hepatitis and eye conditions.
The founder also intimated that regular medical check-ups, is not only key to improving access to health information but also encourages healthy lifestyles.
“Most people are harboring several underlying conditions over the years, unknowingly. As health education forms part of our organization’s objectives, we deem it fit to provide such free health screening exercises to the residents of Nhyiaeso Constituency, where we operate from and elsewhere”, Mr. Obiri Yeboah stated.
The screening held in collaboration with Prime Diagnostics and Eye-Care targeted the elderly, the needy and families who cannot afford regular medical visits.
The beneficiaries, on their part expressed gratitude to the Obiri Foundation, for the kind gesture and promised to follow through the tenets of healthy living, henceforth.
