Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan is elated the Black Stars got their 2017 Africa cup of Nations campaign off to a positive start with a win over surging Uganda at the Stade de Port-Gentil on Tuesday.
Black Stars needed a 32nd penalty goal from West Ham star Andre Ayew to see off their East Africans 1-0 in their opening Group D.
The Al Ahli striker won the penalty for the Black Stars after he was brought down by Ugandan defender Isaac Isinde, and Andre Ayew made no mistake sending reigning Africa best goalkeeper Denis Onyango the wrong side.
And Gyan, who has been in and out of the team due to injuries over the last year, said he was happy with the morale of the players as they started the tournament with maximum points.
“We normally start Afcon tournaments poorly, but this time I am glad we have started well and perhaps it is a sign of good things to come,” Gyan told Africanfootball.com.
“The boys did not play so well because they are still tired after arriving late from the United Arab Emirates, but we shall be better against Mali,” added Gyan.
Ghana are top of Group D after first round of games. They will square off against Mali with a win sealing their place in the quarter-finals.
