After many years of biblical study and linguistical analysis, the Akuapem bible has been revised.
Published in 2012, the newly revised bible will be formally launched in Akropong Akuapem on Sunday by the Chief Justice Georgina Wood.
This was confirmed by the General Secretary of the Bible Society of Ghana Erasmus Odonkor at a short meeting with the media on Tuesday.
He explained language evolves from generation-to-generation and that has necessitated the revision of the local language bibles from time to time.
Rev Odonkor was full of praise for the Translation Consultants led Rev Prof David Ekem and his team of translators who he said had to camp for several years in Akuapem to the have the Akuapem Bible revised.
He said it took the consultants close to 12 years to complete the revision with another set of translators taking some 30 years to translate the Ewe Bible.
Whilst acknowledging the need for Christians to patronize the English bible he was unequivocal that the bible is better understood in the local dialect.
The local dialect bible, he said provides more insights on issues than the English bible would. Citing the use of the word fornication in the bible as an example, Rev Erasmus Odonkor said the act of fornication sounds grievous but when Gas refer to it as ‘agwaman’ which literally mean breaking up a community or a state, then individuals who engage in fornication will know that their act may well destroy the fabric of the society.
He said the Bible Society from time-to-time organizes literacy programmes to ensure that people, mostly the ‘illiterate’ are able to read the bible in their local dialects.
He was however emphatic that the local dialect bibles are the most read in the country.
With the Akuapem bible completely revised, he said the Asante bible will also be completed in October and the Fante bible may be completed next year.
Rev Erasmus Odonkor said Society will organize a float at the Akuapem range and its environs on Saturday to create awareness about the successful revision of the Akuapem Bible before the official launch on Sunday.
