President Akufo-Addo has hinted that the proposal to prevent dual citizens from contesting executive positions in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be withdrawn.
He believes the action will lead to the collapse of the overseas branches of the NPP should the proposal go through.
Speaking at the NPP's extraordinary delegates conference in Kumasi Sunday, president Akufo-Addo said: “the motion to amend the constitution of the party which will make it impossible for dual citizens to hold party office and contest for election will lead to the collapse of our overseas branches will be withdrawn”.
He, however, expressed that the rationale to align the party’s constitution with that of the country is not bad but they must “do it in another manner”.
He also expressed his distaste for the amendment that will allow MPs to appoint members of the constituency executive.
“I strongly oppose to this amendment,” he said.
He concluded with opposing to the amendment that will make the presidential candidate the leader of the party.
“It is against the tradition of our party and will be withdrawn, and if it comes up I will ask Congress to oppose and reject it,” he said.
The NPP set Sunday, December 17 aside to amend its constitution after it postponed same at a previous Congress in Cape Coast.
