Government says it will close all three of the country’s borders for three consecutive days. The closure of the Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, and Burkina Faso borders takes effect from 6 am on Friday and will remain so until a day after the elections. This comes a day after the National Security Co-ordinator, Mr Sam Amoo told journalists he reserves the right to close the country’s borders or otherwise. He said the closure of the borders or other wise would depend on the assessment of the security situation in the country.Mr. Amoo said the closure of the borders was in the interest of National Security. The Executive Director of the West Africa Network for Peace, Mr. Emmanuel Bombande, welcomes the decision.Having criticised the government for closing only the Aflao border a day before the December 7 elections, Mr. Bondande said closing all three borders showed some fairness in the management of the country’s borders. He said the decision was a demonstration of some form of flexibility on the part of the government. The Volta Regional Minister, Mr Kofi Dzamesi said the expression of worry by the president of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs over the closure of the Togo border was ill-informed.The Chief had issued a statement saying the closure of the border amounted to discrimination against the people of the region. But Mr. Dzamesi said the management of national security and matters relating to border closures did not lie in the hands of traditional authorities.Story by Malik Abass Daabu
