The Chief Executive of Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Alfred Oko Vanderpuje has embarked on a familiarization tour to the construction site of the Bus Rapid (BRT)System to inspect the extend of work done.The BRT System is a bus based mass transit system which delivers fast, comfortable and cost effective urban mobility through the provision of exclusive right-of-way lanes.It would serve as a radial arterial route running from Kasoa through Malam, Kaneshie and terminate at the Central Business District in Accra.The BRT is expected to service about 12,000 passengers during peak hours per direction of travel with bus frequencies of about 120 buses per hour at peak periods to reduce travel time for bus passengers along the route from about one hour to an estimated 25 minutes.The pilot BRT system valued at $ 12 million forms part of a $95million Urban Transport Project (UTP) launched by the government in September 2007 with the view to reducing vehicular congestion and related environmental pollution and green house gas emissions.The six districts earmarked for the implementation of the UTP are the Accra Metropolis, Kumasi Metropolis, Tema Metropolis, Ga East District, Ga West District and Ejisu Juabeng Municipality.The mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuje who was very impressed about works on the site commended the contractors for a good job done.He promise government support and commitment in providing the needed resources to ensure the project meets its deadline.The AMA Boss urged the contractors to work assiduously to meet the deadline for the completion of the project.On his part, the resident engineer for the project, Michael Lear revealed that about 50 per cent of the project has been completed and assured the mayor of meeting the deadline.He expressed appreciation to the mayor for taken time out of his busy schedule the pay them a visit.The BRT system has been successfully tried and tested in some cities like Ottawa in Canada and Curitiba in Brazil.The project being funded jointly by the government, the World Bank, the French Development Agency (AFD) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), under the joint auspices of the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment.
