The Amnesty International is disappointed with recent call by a queen mother for prisoners on death row to be executed. Nana Akua Asantewaah III who is queenmother of Akim Kotoku Traditional Area is convinced such prisoners have no right to life when they maliciously took the lives of others. Contributing to a media discussion on the report of the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) and the government white paper in Kumasi, the queen mother was appalled at the continued waste of the tax payers money in feeding such prisoners. Having been attacked by an armed robber at gun point, Nana Akua Asantewaah III noted “armed robbers and ritual murderers have no excuse for their killings, and they should also be killed to deter like-minded [persons]”. But the human rights group, Amnesty International is unimpressed by the queen mother’s call for government to waste the lives of prisoners on death row. Lawrence Amesu, Country Director for Amnesty told Joy News the sentiments by queen mother are “worrying”. He said as a leader, she must ensure that lives of human beings are not taken, arguing, human life is very fundamental. He dismissed assertions that the death penalty will deter others from engaging in armed robbery and other violent conducts. According to him, people were executed for engaging in acts of corruption during military regimes but that has not stopped others from being corrupt. Lawrence Amesu further argued the assertion that the tax payers money is being wasted to feed prisoners on death row is unacceptable, insisting governments have a responsibility to seclude and cater for people who are deemed to be dangerous to society. He called for education on the controversial issue of the death sentence.
