The Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency, Kwadjo Asante, has revealed that he was promptly removed from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus WhatsApp platform immediately after submitting his nomination to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.
The disclosure comes in the wake of a controversial decision by Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who declared four parliamentary seats, including Asante's, as vacant.
Asante disclosed that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Chief Whip of the NPP MPs, was responsible for his removal from the platform.
"The moment I filed my documents to contest as independent, they took me off the NPP MPs platform," he said, adding that he was recently added back to the group in the midst of the confusion over which side constitutes the majority in parliament.
Despite being reinstated, Kwadjo Asante said he chose not to inquire about the reason behind his initial removal, as no explanation was given.
He maintained a low profile on the platform until rumours began circulating that he had withdrawn his independent candidacy.
At that point, he felt it necessary to address the misinformation and clarify that the rumours of his withdrawal from the race were untrue.
“I haven’t spoken since they added me back and when I saw the publication of me rescinding my decision yesterday, I wrote that it was fake when it appeared on the page. It’s about me, so I needed to clarify things to them."
“When he took me off, he didn’t tell me, so I don’t know why he added me back. Maybe my removal was a mistake,” he added.
