A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and MP for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Kyea, has warned of grave consequences if the party in government fights the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

According to the MP, the anti-gay Bill is a severe social intervention that should not be downplayed.

"It's not just an individual's whims and caprices. It's like you're taking a quality decision that will give sanity to our children," he said.

Parliament's Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee is set to begin public hearings on the anti-gay Bill next week with a commitment to finalise its report within three months.

There are more than 150 petitions before the committee on the Bill from all over the world. As a result, the Bill has been referred to Parliament's Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee for consideration.

Atta Akyea said he fully supports the Bill and expects the party to do the same.

"It will have grave consequences if we fight these people, and we should bear that in mind. And we are making history, and people should know," he said.

"So it is a very serious social intervention, this very Bill. It's also a Bill with a very high sense of morality and cultural values. It can't be played down. It cant be rubbished by anybody," he added.

The LGBTQI+ debate has been a subject of controversy following the introduction of a Bill aimed at criminalising the activities of the gay community.

A section of the public is pushing for the passage of the Bill because the activities of the gay community are against the moral values of Ghanaians.

Others have argued against the passage of the Bill, insisting that it will generate hate from the international community.

Parliament is expected to bring closure to the matter at its third sitting of the 8th Parliament.
