A 56 year-old auto mechanic who stole a car battery from a vehicle parked on the premises of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service at Odorkor in Accra was on Thursday sentenced to four years’ imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court.
Ali Mohammed pleaded guilty to being on premises for unlawful purpose and stealing a car battery valued at GH¢ 50 cedis and the court convicted him accordingly.
Chief Inspector Ben Darfour told the court that Police became vigilant when they detected a series of thefts of parts of accident vehicles towed to the Police station at Odorkor.
He said at about 0750 hours on August 25, Sergeant K. Attuah stopped Mohammed, who was carrying a battery at the premises of the Police Station.
Chief Inspector Darfour said Mohammed told Sergeant Attuah that he took the battery from one of the vehicles parked on the premises.
When Mohamed was asked to point out the vehicle from which he removed the battery, he threw the battery behind the Police Charge office, took to his heels and scaled the wall on the premises and attempted to flee.
The prosecution said two policemen gave him a hot chase and managed to apprehend him.
He then confessed that he stole the battery from a Hyundai Grace bus with registration number GT 1855 Q, which had been impounded by the Police.
