Ghana's oldest multi-sport facility, the Azumah Nelson sports complex is set to be transformed into a modern sports and youth facility to aid sports development in the country.
Originally known as the Kaneshie Sports Complex, the facility has been in a very deplorable state and has seen very little maintenance by the state since it was built in the 1970s.
The poor state of the stadium, which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators, has led to many sports fanatics asking Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson to get his name off the edifice.
But that may not be necessary anymore following the Youth and Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah's revelation that the stadium will soon receive a massive facelift.
‘’Let me assure you, with all due respect to our legend professor Azumah Nelson, that the sports complex will be transformed to a modern sporting and youth facility.
So when it[Azumah Nelson sports complex] is transformed, we are also going to host our national federations, our national teams and the situation where we pay for the camping of our national teams will soon be a thing of the past.’’ Asiamah added.
The Minister also added that government wants to build 10 multipurpose youth centres nationwide.
The stadium was originally built during the era of the Supreme Military Council under General Acheampong in the 1970s.
It was used mostly for football matches, on club level by Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics of the Ghana Premier League while the Ohene Djan Stadium was being re-built in 2007.
