The Chairman of the governing NPP says disregard for Covid-19 protocol at the funeral of the former General Secretary of the party should not open the floodgates for any group of persons to demand the right to stage a protest.
Frederick Worsemao Armah Blay admitted that the breach of the safety protocols during Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, aka Sir John's funeral, was a mistake. Therefore, such an action should not be repeated anywhere across the country.
“The Sir John issue was a mistake, and people have criticised it. I am saying that it doesn’t mean that it should be repeated elsewhere.
"There might have been a mistake in the way people gathered at one place, and for that reason, we should allow anybody to gather in numbers?,” he asked during an interview with JoyNews' Kwesi Parker-Wilson.
Freddie Blay further observed that it would be irresponsible for the police to allow any such gathering, which has the potential to trigger a third wave of the pandemic.
“Merely because what happened may be, constituted some breach, if we allow anything to go through and the protocol to breakdown all over the place and allow people to gather. It will be irresponsible for the police.”
He also believes the time has come for the police and the government to guard against any form of gathering unless there will be full compliance with the Covid-19 protocols.
Mr Freddie Blay explained that he is not against demonstration provided they satisfy the requirements.
“I am not saying that people should not demonstrate, but if they can enforce the protocols, they should convince the court.”
The NPP Chairman also dismissed claims that government is hiding behind the police to frustrate the fix the country campaigners from staging a street protest against the Akufo Addo administration
