Sunderland have not enjoyed a great start to the season as they are still without a win after six matches. The Black Cats suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Premier League newcomers AFC Bournemouth in the last clash.
Dick Advocaat has seen his men seal only one win in all competitions, which came against Exeter City as Sunderland sealed a 6-0 win in the second round of the Capital One Cup. He will be looking to eliminate the league leaders in the third round of the competition.
City were cruising in the Premier League as they managed five wins in a row. In the five matches, they were successful in keeping clean sheets in all the fixtures. However, they suffered their first defeat in all competitions against Juventus in the Champions League clash.
Following the defeat at the hands of last season's finalist, Manuel Pellegrini saw his side lose to West Ham United in the league at the Etihad. City lost 2-1 as the Hammers managed to defeat another top team in their own backyard. After two losses, the former Real Madrid manager will be looking to bounce back when City face Sunderland in the Capital One Cup.

Aston Villa will be desperate for a win to kick-start their season in the Capital One Cup third-round tie against local rivals Birmingham City on Tuesday.
Tim Sherwood's side suffered a defeat against West Brom at the weekend to leave his side just outside the bottom three with four points from six games.
Villa have not won since defeating Notts County 5-3 in the previous round of the Capital One Cup.Meanwhile Birmingham have started their season brightly and currently lie just out of the play-off places with a game in hand over the teams around them.
The Blues defeated Gillingham in the last round and would cherish the chance to heap more pressure on their local rivals with victory at Villa Park.
Birmingham have won 14 and drawn 15 out of the 57 games on Villa's home turf, with their last victory at Villa Park coming in 2004. The two teams last meeting ended in a goalless draw in 2010.

Two of the standout performers of the Premier League so far meet at the King Power Stadium in tuesday's Capital One cup tie.
West Ham have already inflicted away day defeats to Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City this season, and will put their reputation to the test against high flying Leicester City.
This is Slaven Bilic's first game in the League Cup since becoming the manager at Upton Park and will be hoping he can take his team one step further than the semi-finals that West Ham managed last year.
Comeback kings Leicester currently occupy a Champions League berth and are the only remaining team unbeaten in the top flight, but have not kept a clean sheet all season.
In their last two games they have fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Aston Villa and draw 2-2 against Stoke.

Jake Livermore could make his comeback for Hull City against Swansea City in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday following his drugs ban.
Livermore has been back in training for almost two weeks and is in line for selection.
Steve Bruce's side have already beaten Accrington and Rochdale to reach the third round and are currently third in the Championship - while Swansea have failed to score in their last two games, losing to Watford and drawing with Everton.
Swansea City manager Garry Monk made 11 changes for the 3-0 win against York City in the previous round - although Hull have a 100% home record this season and will provide a far tougher test.
