People who seek medical services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are being asked to pay special fees authorities describe as development levy.In-patients have to pay 10 Ghana cedis while out-patients pay two Ghana cedis any time a patient accesses the second largest health facility.However, the introduction of the new charges which came into effect this month has attracted reprehension not only from public but hospital staff as well.Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah has been investigating and has intercepted a memo dated June 29, 2012 and signed by Chief Executive Officer Prof Ohene Adjei to charge the levy and issue government approved receipts.The levy is to be used for minor repairs and staff motivation.But the general public and a section of the hospital officials have kicked against the policy.One of the aggrieved hospital official in a muffled voice told Nhyira FM levy will cause an extra financial burden on patients.“I feel pity for the patients because sometime you see a patient who does not even have a penny for a drug, let alone to pay for the levy,” she said.The levy is already causing commotion in the hospital, Nhyira news has witnessed.Patients are refusing to pay the levy with nurses insisting it is a new management policy and they must abide by it.The Public Relations officer of the Hospital Kwame Frimpong said the amount is reasonable.He said the patient can help because he or she is the ultimate beneficiary of hospital services.
