The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has welcomed the annulment of a forced marriage involving a 17-year-old Junior High School Student in Kumasi.
Muniratu Abdul Karim was married off last month to an elderly Nigerian man against her wish.
Concerns from CHRAJ and human rights activists compelled leadership of the Zongo community to intervene and get her back to school to write the BECE.
Joy News has learnt that the marriage was annulled contrary to the earlier arrangement to join the husband in Nigeria after her exam.
But Senior Assistant Registrar at the Kumasi Office of CHRAJ Charles Frimpong says this is not enough.
He said the individuals involved, especially the father of the girl should be charged for their roles in marrying off the girl who is preparing to write her exams.
“The DOVVSU should take the man on for the criminal aspect at least for breaking the girl’s education,” he admonished.
Mr. Frimpong wants this action to be taken to serve as a deterrent to others in the future.
