The spokesperson of former President Jerry Rawlings says government’s attempt to sabotage the commemorative rally of the 33rd June 4th uprising to be held in Aflao is a “miscalculated political gaffe”.
Kofi Adams said the ‘faux pas’ statement issued by some Chiefs in Aflao expressing their displeasure about the chosen venue has rather publicized the June 4th celebration.
Mr. Adams was responding to a statement issued by the Chiefs and People of the Aflao Traditional Area expressing discomfort about the plans to use their town for this year’s June 4 celebrations.
They argued that allowing the June 4th celebration to take place in the area will be a hindrance to Aflao’s development in that the government - which may be bashed at the event - may reverse its plans to provide the area with development projects promised them.
But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Kofi Adams maintained that the June 4th celebration scheduled for the Aflao Victoria Park will come off as planned.
According to him, they have satisfied all requirements and also have the blessings of the paramount chief of the area and that no one can stop them from holding the event.
Kofi Adams indicated that the decision by the Aflao Chiefs to ban them from holding the event in the area has exposed government’s ploy to disrupt the programme.
He added that the choice of Aflao for the event has nothing to do with issues they [Rawlingses] have with government but was to honour the plea of the youth of Aflao who had lobbied for the celebrations to be held in the area.
“If there is anybody they [Aflao Chiefs] should extend their anger to, it should be the President who has not fulfilled the promise he made to them and not us” he said.
Kofi Adams urged all well-meaning National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who believe in probity, accountability and social justice to treat the statement with the contempt it deserves and throng the Victoria Park in their numbers for a successful programme.
