A Sekondi District Magistrate's Court on Monday sentenced Isaac Adu, a mason, and Bernard Azuley, a porter, to 18 months imprisonment in hard labour each for stealing.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Godwin Bawa, said Adu and Azuley, who lived at Lagos Town and Railway Quarters in Takoradi, stole one Benz Bus front axle valued at 600 Ghana Cedis belonging to John Ainoo, a driver domiciled at Lagos Town.
He said the assemblyman and some opinion leaders of Lagos Town organized a Neighbourhood Watchdog Committee to check rampant theft in the area.
Sergeant Bawa said at about 2.00 a.m. on March 19 this year, members of the committee, who were on a night patrol, intercepted the accused persons carrying the axle.
He said after persistent interrogation, the accused persons admitted having stolen the axle from the garage of Ainoo.
Sergeant Bawa said the accused persons were handed over to the Police and after further investigations, they were charged.
