The Accra Magistrate’s Court hearing the SIM box case involving Dr Alexander Kofi Tweneboah, a former GREDA boss, is to decide on a bail application filed by the counsel for the accused person today.

Tweneboah has been charged with SIM box fraud, but pleaded not guilty to the charge.  He was, subsequently, remanded by the court presided over by Mr Wolanyo Kotoku.

He was arrested at his residence at Baatsona, Manet area, on January 15, where several items, including one SIM Box with 64-slot SIM server, 4G Internet Modem, 1 laptop computer and a mini antenna were retrieved, the Police have said.

The case was adjourned to Tuesday, February 10. 

At the last sitting, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kwesi Sakher, told the court that the police were yet to conclude investigations, and prayed the court to accordingly remand the accused person.

Counsel for the accused person, Mr Fiifi Arban, however, prayed the court to grant bail to his client, alleging there was a deliberate attempt by the Police to keep his client in custody and that infringed on his human rights.

He said his plea has still not been taken and therefore he needed to be granted his freedom.

Three persons namely, Emmanuel Kofi Essilfie, Edmond Essilfie and Kwaku Appiah were arrested but they denied knowledge of the gadgets and mentioned Tweneboah, the owner of the house, as the owner of the equipment as well.

The prosecution said Tweneboah was, subsequently, traced and arrested.

He said Tweneboah claimed ownership of the equipment and admitted using them to terminate international calls illegally.

The ex-President of GREDA is among other culprits, who are currently in police grips.

The other culprits are Ebenezer Boateng, Victor Owusu, Kwadjo Asare, Emmanuel Kofi Essilfie, Edmond Essilfie, Kweku Appiah, Alvin Habib, Francis Abbey, David Ayitsi, Daniel Nehme a Lebanese. The arrests were made in Koforidua, Accra, Baatsona, Kumasi, and Tema.

Some of the items retrieved from the operation include, SIM box equipment, SIM cards of the various telecommunication networks, computers, laptops, heavy duty batteries, internal antennas, ACP battery backup and internet routers.

Two of the victims are, however, on the run.
