A meeting of the Bosomtwe District Assembly at Kokoado on Tuesday was nearly marred by confusion as the members engaged in fierce verbal exchanges, highlighting the political fault lines.
Supporters of the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Edward Nti-Berko, and the Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, clashed over the seizure of road construction equipment on the orders of the former.
The said equipment had been hired by the MP to rehabilitate a feeder road linking Kuntanase with Yaase/Adwafo but the DCE would take none of that, insisting that the assembly had already awarded the project on contract.
Some of the assembly members, unhappy with the action taken by Mr Nti-Berko, demanded an explanation and as he sought to justify what he did, the chaos started.
Those on the side of Mr Osei-Mensah accused the DCE of unbridled use of power and clear attempt to undermine the MP, politically.
The government appointees in the assembly and other supporters of the DCE rallied to his defence, arguing that he acted to prevent waste of financial resources.
Tempers flared and the two sides hurled invectives at each other with careless abandon.
The Presiding Member (MP), Mr Joseph Assumin, and the few security men including the District Police Commander and the District Officer of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) had hectic time calming them down.
When sanity was finally restored, the PM ruled that the discussion of the matter should be suspended indefinitely.
Mr Assumin reminded them about the need to put the development of the area ahead of partisan political considerations.
They should make sure that the business of the assembly is not bogged down in party politics.
