Chairman of the Road Contractors Association, Ebo Hughton says the lack of technical training on road construction has contributed significantly to the poor road network in the country.
He told Joy News’ Francisca Kakra Forson that contractors should endeavour to pursue further training in the field to better execute road construction projects.
Also, Mr. Hughton said the many potholes on the roads have developed because funds to do routine maintenance works were unavailable.
“Honestly, I am not happy with the way these pothole patches are being done because at the end of the day, the roads even become rougher than the way they used to be,” he observed.
Meanwhile, he indicated money collected for such purposes in the past, only covered 65 per cent of the roads, pointing out it was not enough.
But because of the depreciation of the Ghana Cedi, he feared it may have even be reduced to 35 to 40 percent “and for the fact that it has not been reviewed over a long period [since 2005].”
For this reason, he maintained contractors could not be blamed entirely for the increasing potholes on the roads.
He noted they used the limited resources available to them to make the roads a bit motorable for the public.
He claimed President John Mahama is aware of the challenges and even held discussions in February 2013 as to the way forward.
