Hundreds of supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the Lower Manya Krobo constituency, have taken to the streets to protest allegations of their MP regarding the alleged failing eyesight of president Mills.
MP Michael Teye Nyaunu, lead organizer of Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings’ flag-bearership campaign, privately encouraged delegates of the governing party to vote against President Mills because of his failing eyesight.
In his view, the president just like his sight, was failing.
But his constituents, angered by the comments, took to the streets Monday morning in their hundreds to protest the statement.
Correspondent Benjamin Tetteh told Joy News the protesters say the MP’s comments were undermining the party in the area.
Some called on him to quit his post in parliament while others said he was not a true Krobo because in their opinion, ‘Nyaunu’ is not a Krobo name.
The demonstration only added to a flurry of condemnations and pressure on the MP for the comments.
The Ghana Blind Union has also criticized the MP for the comments, while Government spokespersons have also condemned Mr Nyaunu’s comments.
President of the Union, Yao Ofori-Debrah told Joy News Mr. Teye Nyaunu’s comments cast a slur on the organization and its members.
He said while the Union was not interested in the politics of the comments, it was concerned that political leaders were creating the impression that the blind cannot be entrusted with any public office.
The group is threatening to also hit the streets if the MP does not retract and apologise for the offending comments.
