The District Chief Executive for Awutu-Effutu-Senya Mr Solomon Quarshie Abbam-Quaye has urged Urban and Area Council members to desist from meddling in chieftaincy disputes to ensure the speedy development of their areas.
Inaugurating the Winneba and Awutu Bawjiase Area Councils at separate ceremonies at Winneba and Bawjiase on Monday, he said the involvement of Area Council members in chieftaincy and Asafo matters it could divide the people, which would retard progress.
He charged them not to condone and connive with government officials to sell public land to developers to ensure the proper planning of towns and communities.
Mr Abbam- Quaye expressed the hope that the inauguration of the councils would enable the Assembly to generate revenue and ease pressure on the Assembly.
The DCE appealed to the members to help in the revenue collection and assist in the maintenance environmental sanitation especially along the beach.
He expressed concern about the apathy of some members of the councils because the office was not paid one and asked them to change their attitude.
Mr Abbam-Quaye said the government would soon review the Local Government Service Act, which would ensure the smooth and effective operations of the councils.
He assured the council’s members that the District Assembly would give them the necessary support to enable them to discharge their duties efficiently.
Mr. Crosby Asmah and Mr. Sulemana Gadoh were elected Chairman of the Winneba and Awutu Bawjiase Area Councils respectively.
Mr Anthony Oppong, Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Electoral Officer, supervised their elections.
