Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has been awarded the ultimate prize -Gold Coast Prize - at this year's Millennium Excellence Awards ceremony held Saturday in Accra.
Dr. Afari Gyan who has headed the Electoral Commission of Ghana for the past seventeen years used the occasion to urge his counterpart in Cote D'Ivoire to stay resolute in the face of the intimidation from political forces.
He further advised electoral administrators to "try to do the work without favour to party or candidates, and if you are committed to doing that you will overcome all the threats, sometimes intimidation, sometimes temptations and you will emerge victorious."
He admits that elections are difficult as a result of the players involved adding politicians, the key players in elections are "very strange people."
Dr. Afari Gyan said "they [politicians] are one breed when they are on the other side of the fence, a different breed as soon as they cross to the other side of the fence."
In all twenty nine distinguished personalities were awarded at the ceremony.
