After engaging the police in a bloody hide-and-seek game, Awudu Maliama, leader of the robbery gang that allegedly attacked the Madina branch of Ecobank and shot dead a policeman on duty two years has been killed.
Awudu Mahama was killed at Ofankor old barrier on Wednesday February 9, 2011 when, together with an accomplice, he attempted to rob a certain Alhaji James Seidu Saboggo around 7:30pm.
Items found on him included a bag containing a machine gun, screw drivers, two new DVLA number plates and a fake roadworthy certificate.
This development has brought Awudu's notorious empire to an end.
Some of his accomplices were the late Kofi Afoakwa aka Not Nice, the late Baba Noa, aka Taller, a Nigerian, Yaw Afoakwa aka Dadisen and Drop-Am, who are standing trial for robbery.
Awudu Mahama and his gang were alleged to be behind the robbery that took place at Dunkwaa On-Offin which claimed the life of a taxi driver a year ago, the bullion van attack at Klagon and the Madina Ecobank robbery that led to the death of a Police Constable on duty.
Awudu Mahama, suspected to be in his mid 30s, and his unidentified accomplice robbed the victim of his laptop and a Nissan Primera with registration number GT 4519 Z when the latter had stopped to shop at the supermarket around Amanfrom near Pokuase.
Briefing journalists yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, together with her deputy ACP Christian T. Yohuno indicated that on Wednesday around 7pm, the victim stopped at Amanfrom near Pokuase and went to the supermarket, but left his engine running and ignition key in its place.
In less than three minutes, Awudu and his accomplice who were monitoring him, jumped into his vehicle and drove off.
"The victim screamed for help and with the help of some taxi drivers in th area, gave the robbers a hot chase," she said.
During the high-speed chase, the were crossed by the pursuing taxi drivers around Ofankor.
"The two robbers came out of the vehicle and started firing until Awudu ran through the township of Ofankor and was overpowered and lynched by residents, while his accomplice, who still had some ammunition in his gun, ran into a nearby bush still firing".
DGOP Rose Bio-Atinga maintained that when a police patrol team got to the scene, the suspect Awudu was still alive.
He was rushed to the police hospital, but he died on the way.
"It was after his death that we identified him as Awudu, the man who shot and killed the policeman when they attacked the Ecobank branch at Madina and also robbed the bullion van at Klagon, near Nungua," she stated.
The regional commander thanked the taxi drivers who helped the man get back his car.
