Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, has urged the Church to train people to become morally upright to enable them to take up leadership positions at the grass roots and national levels of governance. He said the Church might fail the people if it could not help train people for the manpower needs of the country. Mr. Ankrah made the call at the opening of the Second National Convention of the Men’s Ministry of the Global Evangelical Church (GEC), under the theme “Fulfilling God’s Purpose through Your Gifts”, in Accra on Saturday. He stressed that the Church must train leaders that would not fall prey to corrupt practices and deviant behaviour, adding that the religious organisation was a development partner, especially in local governance. Mr. Ankrah said the biggest dilemma that faced the Church and the nation was how to help young children identify their talents. He said “Counselling was the best way out,” for the youth and called on educational institutions to have vibrant guidance units to help children identify their talents early enough. Mr. Ankrah advised parents not to push courses or subjects down the throats of their children but they should allow children to select programmes that they could do best. He also asked parents to train their children to work hard wherever they would find themselves and appealed to children to be discipline to able to realise their dreams. Mr. Ankrah asked Ghanaians to be patience with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government as its was laying the necessary structures to transform the economy of the country. He said the claim of the opposition that the NDC government had destroyed all that New Patriotic Party (NPP) had done in the past eight years was false. Mr Ankrah said the NPP must not lose sight of the huge debts it left, which the current administration was making frantic effort to service. Reverend J. F. K. Mensah, leader and founder of the Great Commission Church, said the main problem confronting the country today was economic doldrums, road accidents and armed robbery. He called on the government to take serious measures to reduce accidents on the roads and armed robbery and improve the economy. Rev. N.Y. Azalekor, the National Director of the Men Ministry, called on men to be alive to their responsibilities, especially giving financial, moral and psychological support to their families.
