The Food and Drugs Board has destroyed the first consignment of three thousand cartons of turkey tail imported illegally.
The products also known as “tsofi” were impounded from the Diamond Cold Store at Kwashieman, a suburb of Accra. It is valued at 105 thousand Ghana Cedis.
The importer will bear the cost of destruction and a fine ranging between 10 and 20 thousand Ghana Cedis.
Public Relations Officer of the FDB James Lartey tells Joy News the board has introduced stiffer punitive measures to deter traders from smuggling the product into the country.
According to him, the product is being banned due to its health implications.
James Lartey says other regional offices of the FDB have are also impounded hundreds of cartons of turkey tail for destruction.
