The Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin is entreating state officials to relinquish extravagant lifestyle that burdens the state's resources.
As part of President Akufo-Addo's commitment to share the burden of the economic hardship posed by the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Afenyo-Markins is of the view that “anything that amounts to luxury, the Ghanaian politician should be ready to forgo.”
The President during the celebration of Workers' Day revealed that his outfit together with that of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and all members of the Executive would not see any increase in salary this year.
“I have taken the decision to freeze salary increment for this year, 2021 for myself as president, the vice president, ministers, deputy ministers, and all appointees of the executive.
“It is our modest contribution to reduce the damage to our public revenue and to help hasten our nation’s recovery from the ravages of the pandemic,” he stated.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have bemoaned the economic hardship experienced under the incumbent government.
While some took to social media to vent out their spleen and campaign for a change such as rising youth unemployment, inefficient health systems, poor road networks, others demanded a slash in salaries of political leaders.
Reacting to that, the Effutu legislator admonished Ghanaians to be circumspect in their demands from government.
According to him, the needed resources, if taken away from officials, will render their duties to the country ineffective.
“For anything that is a necessity for the purpose of the office, forgoing means holding hostage your own ability to serve your people well.”
