Italia 90 hero Kevin Sheedy is to undergo surgery laster this week after being diagnosed with bowel cancer. Sheedy currently serves as an academy coach at Everton where he enjoyed ten years as a player. “It’s not ideal but I have to remain positive,” Sheedy told evertonfc.com. “After a period of rehabilitation I will return to my coaching role at Everton. “There is a history in the family,” he said highlighting the importance of early diagnosis is people do experience symptoms. “It’s so important that people don’t ignore the early signs and symptoms and don’t be afraid to consult a GP.” Current Everton captain Phil Neville tweeted his support saying: “Would like to wish Kevin Sheedy a speedy recovery from cancer – legend at the club and doing a great job bringing the young kids through.” Shay Given also gave his support: “Lots of luck and a speedy recovery to Kevin Sheedy who has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. Please God he makes a full recovery.” Current international and Everton player Shane Duffy said: “Hope Kevin sheedy has a full recovery! Great coach who taught me a lot. My prayers are with him.” Michael Owen praised Sheedy’s skills while giving his best wishes: “Just heard the news about one of my favourite players when I was growing up. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Kevin Sheedy” Sheedy won 46 caps for Ireland between 1984 and 1993 and is best remebered for scoring the 73rd minute equaliser against England in the Italia 90 group stages.
