Former Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana Most Rev Aboagye Mensah has urged the Electoral Commission to be neutral and fair to all parties.

Rev Aboagye Mensah said the Charlotte Osei led EC must not only be fair but must be seen to be fair to all, adding, any perception of bias against some parties will not be in the interest of the country.

He was reacting to a joint statement released by the Progressive Peoples Party, National Democratic Party and People's National Congress accusing the EC of bias.

The parties believe the EC is supervising an election that will retain the incumbent in government.

They cited what they described as the unfortunate disqualification of the flagbearers of the three parties which they said had denied them about six months of campaigning period.

Reacting to the statement by the three parties, Rev Aboagye Mensah said he was personally disappointed at the disqualification of the parties and cited a story in one of the African countries in which the incumbent attempted through a referendum to take out all the smaller parties ahead of a crucial election.

He said the president of that country, whose name he refused to mention, was impressed upon by the All African Conference of churches, not to go through with the plan and he listened.

Rev Aboagye Mensah said he was also happy when the smaller parties in Ghana were also allowed to contest after they were initially disqualified.

He added the conduct of the EC before polls was crucial in ensuring that the entire process is seen as credible.

He also encouraged the three parties not to give up but continue to work hard.

"We hope the EC and her team will listen to both sides. The EC must be neutral, objective and must be seen to be doing so." he said.
