Andy Murray’s resurgence continued with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 victory over Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the French Open fourth round.
The world number one was pushed throughout by his big-hitting opponent, who was ultimately undone by a collection of untimely unforced errors.
Twice Khachanov broke the Murray serve; twice Murray responded immediately with a break of his own.
The Scot used his post-match interview to send his condolences to the people caught up in the recent terror attacks in London and Manchester:
"Terrible tragedy in London, also in Manchester only six or seven days ago. Paris has also had some problems in the last (few) years. I'm sure everybody will share in thoughts and prayers for everyone who's been affected by this. It's obviously something affecting large parts of Europe and all over the world. I appreciate everyone still coming out to support the tennis and creating a fantastic atmosphere."
Murray will meet either eighth seed Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.
The 30-year-old arrived at Roland Garros in disarray, with just one semi-final appearance to show from four clay-court tournaments.
But boosted by the return of coach Ivan Lendl to his player’s box, Murray’s form has surged – with his third-round defeat of Juan Martin del Potro suggesting he could go deep in Paris.
With chief threats Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem lurking on the other half of the draw, Murray’s potential path to the final is favourable with third seed Stan Wawrinka seemingly the biggest obstacle.
