The National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has suspended its sit-down strike following a crunch meeting with the Ministry of Roads and Highways on Thursday, June 29.
According to the National Vice Chairman of the union, Sunday Alabi, the decision to halt the strike was because both parties had agreed that the group's demands would be met.
Speaking to JoyNews, he said, “After meeting with the ministers, Roads, and Highways and Transport and in further consultation with our members, the union has decided to suspend strike by midnight today, June 29, 2023."
He explained that the decision to call off the strike was based on three conditions that both Ministers have agreed to fulfill.
Highlighting the conditions, he said;
- Though works are currently ongoing on our roads, the contractor will increase his equipment holding on the road and ensure that quality is improved within three weeks.
- The access roads to the depot in Kumasi, Takoradi, and Buipe are improved. Works on these access roads will commence by tomorrow [Friday] June 30, 2023.
- A seven-member committee is formed. The Ministry of Roads and Highways will give us three, then four from the union will be set up to monitor the projects.
On Monday, June 26, 2023, the union embarked on a strike to press home their demands for the rehabilitation of the roads in the petroleum enclave of Tema, Takoradi, Kumasi, and Buipe.
They contend that all attempts to get the government through the Ministry of Transport to address their issue have proven futile.
LPG Marketers Association had warned of a shortage of LPG if the strike by the National Petroleum Tankers Drivers Union was not averted.
