The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has donated hospital consumables worth about GH100, 000 to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba in the Central Region.

The gesture forms part of the insurance trade body’s corporate social responsibility in a clear demonstration of its unwavering commitment to supporting victims of road crashes. The event was part of activities lined up to mark the Insurance Awareness Month celebration.

Speaking at the event, the President of the GIA, Mr Seth Kobla Aklasi, stated that the compelling rationale behind this charitable endeavour is intricately linked to the alarming surge in road accidents along the perilous Winneba-Cape Coast highway.

The GIA’s magnanimous gesture, therefore, seeks to address the pressing needs of accident victims, many of whom are valued clients of insurance companies.

Mr Aklasi cogently articulated that by insuring individuals, the insurance companies are concerned about accidents, which sadly remain a worrying trend.

The Winneba–Cape Coast road has emerged as an accident-prone stretch, prompting the GIA to step up and help proactively address this pressing concern.

“By insuring individuals, we are actually taking responsibility for accidents which are a daily occurrence. Whatever you do, there may be road crashes and we have come to identify the Winneba road as one that is road-crash prone. Donating to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba is our way of saying that in the whole process of insurance, we think that we need to support victims of road crashes, hence the donation of absorbent gauze rolls, dissolvable syringes, latex surgical gloves and other consumable”, he indicated.

The tangible contributions presented to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba encompass an array of essential medical supplies vital for expedient medical attention to accident victims.

Graciously receiving this commendable donation on behalf of the Hospital, Dr Prah George Kwame, the Head of the Hospital expressed profound gratitude to the GIA.

He called upon other corporate entities to draw inspiration from the GIA’s laudable act of benevolence and ardently support initiatives aimed at ameliorating the predicament of road accident victims.

Led by Dr Prah George Kwame, the Executives of the GIA and representatives of insurance companies were taken on a tour of the facility in order to apprise themselves of the various units.

Against a dropdown of road safety statistics provided by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), which indicated a notable 15.06% reduction in recorded road accidents in the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022, it is apparent that concerted efforts are essential in furthering this positive trajectory.

As the Greater Accra Region grapples with the highest number of recorded crashes and the Oti Region accounts for the least incidents, the Central Region, which is home to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Winneba was not immune to such unfortunate occurrences, recording 204 cases in the first quarter of 2023.

With the GIA’s noble act echoing resoundingly, it is hoped that more entities will take cognizance of their social responsibility and emulate the spirit of altruism, collectively fostering a safer and more compassionate society for all Ghanaians.
