The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) CEO, Akwasi Agyeman, has officially resigned from his position, bringing to an end a tenure marked by significant growth and transformation in the tourism sector.

Appointed in January 2017, Mr Agyeman steered the GTA through challenging times, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and led a strong recovery.

Under his leadership, international tourist arrivals surged from 355,108 in 2020 to an impressive 1,148,002 in 2023, surpassing pre-pandemic figures.

Domestic tourism also experienced remarkable growth, with visitor numbers increasing from 456,000 in 2017 to 1.4 million in 2023.

During his tenure, Mr Agyeman spearheaded the rehabilitation of key tourist attractions, including Kintampo Waterfalls, Kwahu Paragliding Site, Bunso Eco Park, Denkyira Kyekyewere Eco Park, Tano Boase Sacred Grove, Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, and Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary.

He also oversaw the redevelopment of the Accra Tourist Information Center and historical landmarks such as Nationalism Park, Geese Park, Salaga Slave Market, Bonwire Kente Museum, and Pikworo Slavery Camp.

Mr. Agyeman’s innovative marketing campaigns, such as The Year of Return and December in Ghana, positioned Ghana as a prime destination for global tourists, particularly during the festive season.

His dedication to digital transformation was evident through the launch of the National Tourism Destination Single Window Project and the “Visit Ghana” App, aimed at streamlining tourism services.

He also prioritised capacity building, training over 3,069 individuals in customer service, digital marketing, and tourism product development through the Ghana CARES Obaatanpa Initiative.

As he steps down, Mr Agyeman hands over leadership responsibilities to Otto Langmane, Acting Chief Director of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, and Ekow Sampson, Deputy CEO in charge of Operations.

His resignation marks the end of a pivotal chapter for the Ghana Tourism Authority, with hopes that the new leadership will continue the momentum and build upon the foundation he has laid.
