The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has extended warm congratulations to Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko following his appointment as the Director-General of the National Communications Authority (NCA).
GIBA described the announcement, made by the Presidency on January 22, 2025, as a significant milestone for the country’s telecommunications and broadcasting sectors.
A statement issued by GIBA over the appointment said with over two decades of experience in the electronic communications regulatory field, Rev. Ing. Fianko is no stranger to the industry.
It traced his journey, which it said began as a National Service Person at the NCA, and has seen him rise through the ranks to become Director of Engineering.
GIBA said throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to the development of radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunications regulation, and policy formulation.
In his new role, Rev. Ing. Fianko is expected to lead initiatives that will shape a dynamic and innovative broadcasting landscape in Ghana, according to GIBA.
“Rev. Ing. Fianko’s extensive experience of over twenty years in the electronic communications regulatory environment speaks volumes of his commitment and dedication to the industry. His roles, from starting as a National Service Person to serving in various capacities at the NCA — including Director of Engineering — have equipped him with a robust understanding of radio frequency spectrum management, telecommunication and broadcasting regulation, and policy formulation.
“As the Director-General, Rev. Ing. Fianko will be instrumental in steering the regulatory framework necessary to support a vibrant broadcasting landscape in Ghana, fostering innovation and addressing the evolving challenges in the telecommunication sector. His previous involvement in significant initiatives, such as chairing the African Telecommunications Union Task Group on Rural Connectivity Spectrum Recommendations, showcases his commitment to enhancing access and quality within the industry.
“GIBA's positive experiences working with Rev. Ing. Fianko over the years, particularly during recent challenging times within the broadcast industry, where he exhibited his professional and personal commitment to protecting the broadcast media, as outlined in Ghana's Constitution from where he sits, demonstrates his strong character and principles, earning him the recognition of a credible public servant for his efforts.
“GIBA holds steadfast to its mission of promoting the interests of independent broadcasters and advocating for the orderly development of the broadcasting sector. We are optimistic that Rev. Ing. Fianko’s leadership will contribute positively to our collective goals, including maintaining the independence of the broadcasting sector, engaging in fruitful dialogue with government and regulatory bodies, and enhancing the standards and performance within the industry.
“Moreover, Rev. Ing. Fianko's educational credentials, which include a first degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and a Master of Philosophy in Applied Business Leadership and Management, illustrate his preparedness to tackle the complexities of this crucial role. Additionally, his involvement as a Minister of the Methodist Church and his work within the community reflect his passion for service — a valuable trait as he leads the NCA.
“As we look forward to the positive impacts of his leadership on the telecommunications landscape, we encourage all stakeholders in the broadcasting sector to unite and support the initiatives of the NCA under his stewardship to enhance the quality and reach of broadcast services across Ghana.
“Once again, congratulations to Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko. The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association stands ready to collaborate with you in the pursuit of excellence in communication and broadcasting in Ghana.”
