The Ghana Medical Association has accused the Commissioner for Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) for playing politics with the implementation of the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) for the Association. According to Secretary for GMA, Dr. Frank Serebour, the Commissioner for FWSC, George Smith Graham is doing propaganda with the implementation of the SSSS, because the association has not been told the truth with regard to the SSSS implementation. He said the Association wrote to FWSC three weeks ago, but no reply had been received. Dr. Frank Serebour said on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday that it is not as if the GMA is insensitive to the plight of Ghanaians, but the government has pushed them to the wall leaving them with no option than to embark on the strike. The GMA had earlier issued a press release stating that if by 7th October 2011, government had not implemented the SSSS for its members, they will embark on a strike action. The strike action is effective in some places but reports say doctors have been at post at the Sunyani Government Hospital in the Brong Ahafo Region, and Hohoe Government Hospital in the Volta Region. Meanwhile, Mr. Smith-Graham has denied the position of the GMA regarding claims that he was playing politics with the implementation of the SSSS. In a heated argument over who has to be blamed for the strike action, Smith-Graham said government cannot pay the exact figure GMA is demanding. Ark Fm’s Kwaku Abrampah reported from the Sunyani Regional Hospital that Doctors and Nurses including other paramedics were at post as at Monday morning. At Achimota Hospital, Asempa Fm’s Afia Amankwah Tamakloe said there were no Doctors at post as patients look elsewhere for treatment. She reported that staff at the OPD were told to stop issuing cards because it was not clear whether Doctors will be at post today. Correspondent Ohene Djan said Doctors at the Effia Nkwanta government Hospital in the Western Region were seen attending to patients admitted to the facility before the strike begun. He however said they refused to attend to fresh cases.
