Ghana News Agency’s soccer team on Saturday flogged the Association Sports Broadcasters of Ghana (ASBOG) 3-1 in a friendly match played at the Legon Park of the University of Ghana.
The game, which forms part of the activities designed to herald the All Africa Media Games scheduled for next month, saw the nation’s only wire service team, dominating proceedings right from the blast of the whistle with perfect team work and cohesion to the admiration of the fans.
It was therefore no surprise, when the GNA lads got the opener in the 16th minute through Hector Avornyotse who back healed a well laid cross from Edmund Mawuko into the net.
ASBOG only managed a short-lived pressure on GNA after the goal but could not penetrate the solid defensive network of the wire service lads.
GNA held on to the lead till the close of the half.
With some pep talks from coach William Ezah, GNA returned to the second half, a much improved side and pinned ASBOG to their own half in search of an insurance goal, but over elaboration by Avornyotse, Richard Aidan, Aliu Ibrahim saw them missing glorious opportunities that came their way.
GNA’s live-wire Mawuko, however made amends in the 35th minute when he pierced through the ASBOG defence with ease before delivering a deceptive shot past the ASBOG goalie for the second goal.
The broadcasters responded positively to the challenge and with swift move, managed to reduce the tally through Bismark Antwi in the 42nd minute when he connected a cross from Bibi Boakye Ansah of Happy FM.
As the game progressed to the later stages, the GNA team cheered on by their technical bench went on target again to seal victory for the day.
This came about when substitute Felix Quaye of the Systems Department, whose wealth of experience added more bite to the attack, in a fast combination with David Zeneru and Mawuko, resulted in another perfect pass to Muniru Osman in the heart of the opponents defence, who made no mistake by slotting the ball into the net for the third goal and the final goal.
Several attempts by ASBOG to return to redeem their earlier boast of carrying the game were thwarted by the GNA defence even with the introduction of their top marksman Mark Paradise Okacha as he failed to make any impact in the game till the close of proceedings.
The victorious Ghana News Agency team was presented with a colourful certificate by the organizers, Traffic Media as their prize with the losers also receiving a symbolic certificate for participating.
