Mr. Alfred Baku has been appointed as the first Ghanaian General Manager of Goldfield's Tarkwa Mine with effect from Thursday 20th May 2010.
This is a significant demonstration of the Company's localization policy and the readiness of the local managers to take up leadership roles in the industry.
In October 2008, Mr. Baku became the first Ghanaian to be appointed General Manager of the Damang Mine, Abosso. Mr. Baku has over 15 years of mining experience both in Ghana and Australia, ranging from operations, technical and managerial expertise. In the last two years he has successfully worked with his team to greatly enhance the productivity of the Damang operations and has extended the life of the mine substantially.
Mr. Baku attended the T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, also in the Ashanti Region, and holds an MSc. degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Mines & Technology, Tarkwa. He also holds a Mine Manager's certificate and is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining Metallurgy (AusIMM)
Mr. Baku was first employed as a Pit Supervisor by Abosso Gold Limited-AGL (now the Damang Mine) in 1997, when the Company was owned by the Australia-based Ranger Minerals Pty.
He has been a member of the Senior Management team since 2002, where his strong operational leadership coupled with his commitment to sound community relations made a major impact on Damang's success.
Mr. Baku is married to Elizabeth with whom he has three (3) children Theodora, Dave and Alfred (Jnr). He enjoys playing soccer and is a keen golfer.
