Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has stated that the Akufo-Addo-led government has no plans of calling off the 2020 elections.
He said the elections will come off as government finds no justifiable reasons for calling off the elections.
“Government takes note of commentary suggesting that some possible governance arrangement can be appropriate should it become impossible to hold elections in December but government does not contemplate any justifiable reason to seek to extend its first term constitutional mandate with the virus as an excuse," he said.
There have been doubts over whether the December may come off due to outbreak of Covid-19 and its accompanying measures to control the spread of the virus.
<Measures including a ban on social gathering, observing social distancing, a previous lockdown, and making matters worse, the daily increasing numbers of Covid-19 cases are all factors that seem as possible hindrances for the election.
As a result, all activities and measures towards the preparation of the election have been put on hold including a decision by the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register needed for the election.
However, the Information Minister while providing updates on Ghana's current situation on Covid-19, addressed the issue.
The Ofoase Ayirebi MP has assured that the elections will come off, come what may.
Mr. Nkrumah said the country will take after the steps of other countries who have conducted elections successfully and those who are making preparations in that regard amid the outbreak of the pandemic.
Government said instead of contemplating measures that are not envisaged in the constitution, our best energies, our innovations, our creativity should be invested in exploring how a country like ours can have safe, free and fair elections.
"If countries like South Korea, Mali, and the others have been able to do it Ghana can do same as well," he added.
